Bloktopia has announced progress against its Product Roadmap, with work nearing completion on the rebuild of the base code from High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) to URP (Universal Render Pipeline) within the Unity Gaming Engine.
URP over HDRP?
The original vision for Bloktopia was pulled together using assets from the Unity store on the HDRP. The long-term plan was to introduce an Art Department that could conceptualize and create more interesting and exciting areas to add to that look and feel. With a new Art Department in place, it was then a case of comparing which pipeline to use.
A game, or in this case Metaverse, which is built-in HDRP, only targets hardware like a PC, Playstation, or Xbox, meaning that Bloktopia wouldn’t have been as accessible across multiple devices.
The team also felt that building the entire 21-level Skyscraper in HDRP would pose challenges because of graphical requirements and ultimately would have taken longer.
What is Exactly Unity HDRP?
Unity HDRP stands for High Definition Rendering Pipeline, an infrastructure that enables users to achieve the graphics standard with high performance.
The High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) is a high-fidelity Scriptable Render Pipeline built by Unity to target modern (Compute Shader compatible) platforms.
HDRP utilizes Physically-Based Lighting techniques, linear lighting, HDR lighting, and a configurable hybrid Tile/Cluster deferred/Forward lighting architecture.
Unity HDRP gives the tools to create applications such as games, technical demos, and animations to a high graphical standard.
Projects made with HDRP are not compatible with the Universal Render Pipeline (URP). HDRP features are not cross-compatible between HDRP and URP.
However, if someone wants to create a game that has top-of-the-line graphics with a light drawing process and works on desktops, laptops, and consoles, then Unity URP will be a better option.
What is Unity URP?
URP (The Universal Render Pipeline) is a prebuilt Scriptable Render Pipeline made by Unity. URP provides artist-friendly workflows that let users quickly and easily create optimized graphics across a range of platforms, from mobile to high-end consoles and PCs.
Using the Universal Render Pipeline (URP), it is possible to achieve realistic lighting that is suitable for a range of art styles.
For example, Unity URP 11 adds support for Point Light shadows. Point Light shadows helps create more realistic simulations of local sources of light, such as lamps, torches, campfires, etc.

URP is the go-to render pipeline. It’s designed to run on any platform, with great performance. Importantly, it also gives the opportunity to run a BLOK VR version.
Bloktopia was also keen to make this decision on the basis that it wouldn’t impact the graphics. Bringing in a new Art Department allows the team to play around more with aesthetics, which effectively means making the game look good, and the team is really pleased with the work delivered so far.

The next step for the team is to improve Level One of Bloktopia even more, with the development and delivery of modular store capability and multiplayer functionality ahead of the Bloktopia VR version of the Alpha compatible with Oculus Quest 2, which will launch in Q2 2022.
