One of the most-watched sports leagues globally, the English Premier League (EPL), has filed two Crypto and NFT trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Web3 NFT Soccer In The Metaverse
The Metaverse and NFTs are becoming increasingly popular for global brands looking to connect with fans in new ways, and if web3 NFT soccer becomes a megatrend in the metaverse, the way television rights are distributed could be completely transformed.
Michael Kondoudis, a trademark attorney, announced the Premier League’s entry into the metaverse through his Twitter account on June 6.
The application entails the league’s name and “lion head” logo, alongside the “loving cup trophy” logo.

EPL Web3 NFT Soccer Goes Metaverse
It might seem as if the English Premier League is at least considering venturing into the digital world like NFTs, cryptocurrencies, digital tokens, digital collectibles, digital trading cards, digital art, crypto trading, virtual sneakers, clothing, headwear, and sportswear.
“The Premier League is regularly watched by more than a billion people, so the value attached to the brand is substantial. These filings represent a logical step to protect the brand in today’s economy, including virtual and crypto elements, and tomorrow’s virtual economy in the metaverse,” Kondoudis said.
Kondoudis also noted that the number of sports entities becoming part of the metaverse would continue to grow, especially in the next year.
Sports brands, according to the lawyer, realize that protection is needed in the metaverse as it continues to evolve.
Fifa Welcomes Blockchain and Metaverse
FIFA also filed for an NFT and Crypto trademark like the English Premier League.
Moreover, Algorand, the Proof-Of-Stake green blockchain-based technology explicitly developed for the financial sector, recently signed an agreement with FIFA for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the Australia & New Zealand Women’s World Cup in 2023 Official Sponsorship.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino attended a business conference in Los Angeles during which the deal was officially announced.
“We are delighted to announce this partnership with Algorand,” Gianni Infantino commented.
Additionally, the arrangement involves sponsorship and technical collaboration designed to help FIFA develop a digital assets strategy, FIFA explained. This provides FIFA with an opportunity to promote web3 soccer-related NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

Quite recently, Manchester City and Sony team up for Metaverse Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City, the Premier League champions, is already making inroads in the metaverse.

Three Year Metaverse Partnership
The two corporate giants signed a three-year partnership, which has seen experts from Sony visit the Etihad Stadium to digitally map it and recreate it virtually.
Hawk-Eye, a Sony subsidiary, will provide the football club with virtual reality experts to use image analysis and skeletal-tracking technology to assist with the project.
Manchester City may be able to fill a virtual Etihad Stadium several times over by jumping on the Metaverse train and allow fans around the world who may not be able to attend a live match to watch a game from their own homes.

Nuria Tarre, chief marketing, and fan engagement officer of Manchester City Football Group, told:
“The whole point we could imagine of having a metaverse is you can recreate a game, you could watch the game live, you are part of the action in a different way through different angles and you can fill the stadium as much as you want because it’s unlimited, it’s completely virtual.”
“But also, you’re in control of what you want to be watching at that time. There’s not one broadcast point of view, you can look at it through any angle of the stadium. That’s the sky – the limit.”

Manchester United Partners With Tezos Blockchain
Earlier this month, the other Manchester-based Premier League team, Manchester United signed a multi-year training kit sponsorship deal with blockchain platform Tezos.
The sponsorship deal is said to be worth more than £20m ($27.1m) a year and means the Tezos logo will be placed on the team’s training uniform.
The deal is also said to encompass further collaboration beyond the training kit sponsorship and could potentially see the club also moving into the metaverse and Web3.
Chiliz partners with EPL Teams
As part of their partnership with Chiliz, the global blockchain provider for the sports industry, six Premier League football teams stepped into the metaverse.
